Race, Ethnicity, and Disparities in Risk of End-organ Lupus Manifestations Following SLE Diagnosis in a Multiethnic Cohort
Arthritis Care Res (Hoboken). 2022 Epub ahead of print doi: 10.1002/acr.24892
California Lupus Epidemiology Study (CLUES) finds heightened risks of developing renal, haematologic, and multiorgan disease following SLE diagnosis among Hispanic and Asian patients with SLE.
Racial and ethnic minority groups are known to experience a disproportionate burden of SLE, and developed organ-threatening disease earlier, compared to White participants. Yet, data on the onset of lupus manifestations after SLE diagnosis across multiple organ domains is limited, in particular among diverse racial and ethnic groups in the US.
Understanding how SLE disease trajectories differ by race and ethnicity addresses an important knowledge gap in lupus research.
To this end, Aguirre, et al. examined disease trajectories among patients enrolled in a multi-ethnic cohort of SLE patients in the San Francisco Bay Area and investigated racial and ethnic differences in the risk of disease following SLE diagnosis.
